[0:00] From Hi-Fi Speakers, I am Mark Whitney with today's Educational Minute.

[0:05] Listen up. This is about selecting your topic. But, before you select a topic, remember you're going to be introduced by the host of the meeting, by the emcee, by the Toastmaster. So you want to give some tips to the person who's going to be welcoming you to the stage. Write your introduction down. Do not assume this person knows what they are doing. All prepared speeches require an introduction. A proper introduction of you and your speech is important to your success. Use this as your guide. Include the purpose of your speech. Explain why you selected the topic to the person introducing you. State the purpose and state the objective of your presentation. Incorporate a little personal background about yourself. If appropriate, make it humorous because people like to laugh. If there was a pill you could take that made you laugh, a pill that was safe to take, you would certainly take it. So if you can spice it up, punch it up a little bit, as we say in the comedy business, go ahead and do that.

[1:13] Read what you send before you send it. Read it out loud if you're sending it written down to see how it sounds, because we write for the spoken word different than we do the written word, right? Then give your finished introduction to the person who will be introducing you at the site. In addition to emailing it to the person, bring it with you. Take no chances. This is live. It's happening for real. So you got to cover yourself with a little bit of redundancy. Ask the person introducing you if she has any questions, then answer the questions. Rehearse the introduction yourself. Again, see how it sounds.
